Scientists based at MIT in Massachusetts have developed the technology that can charge a conventional lithium ion battery that can be found in Mobile Phones, Digital Cameras, Digital Camcorders and Laptop Computers 100 times fast than a regular charger, recharging a battery within 10 seconds rather than 3 hours.
This technology can use the same sorts of materials that are already being used within the industry so it should be a relatively easy and quick to change to this new type of production.
Lithium ion batteries are the most popular choice for manufacturers of handheld devices because the can hold a larger charge within a much smaller space making them an ideal choice for the ipod, iphone, smartphones etc. The drawback of the Lithium ion battery is that it has a relatively slow recharge time often taking at least 3 hours to fully recharge.
This new technique could be the start of a new era of digital handheld devices as they would allow for much smaller batteries that can be charged and discharged in 10 seconds. This would allow devices to be much lighter and last much longer, maybe up to 3 years rather than the average 1-2 years that Li-ion batteries currently last.
The most exciting thing about this new technology is it’s possible application within the electric car industry. A much larger battery for electric vehicles could be produced which could be charged within 5 minutes making the petrol station re-charge a real possibility on long journeys.
