On Monday in a move long awaited by millions of consumers worldwide, mobile phone manufacturers announced that all their mobile phones will be able to use the same charger.
Up till now most of the major mobile phone manufacturers have used different chargers meaning that when the consumer buys a new mobile phone they have no use for the old charger and throw it away causing thousands of tons of unwanted waste.
Now all the major mobile phone manufacturers including Blackberry, Apple, Nokia, Samsung, Siemens, Palm, Motorola, Sanyo and Sony Ericsson have agreed on a single charging system in Eurpope, the micro USB which Blackberry already use. The micro USB not only allows charging but is also a high speed data port so you can transfer data and charge the mobile phone at the same time. This new standard charger will replace 30 different chargers which are in use across Europe at the present time.
The mobile phone manufacturers are hoping that the new standard will become a reality by 2012.
