From 5th May 2009 the UK government has introduced brand new regulations which effect the collection and treatment of used batteries in the UK.
Any company or person who sells portable batteries or products within the Uk market will become a battery producer and be responsible for operating within the new Battery Compliance Scheme. This will include retailers and importers.
The Government has set guidelines for defining who would be classed as a large and small producer. The larger producers will be expected to pay for the collection and recycling costs of waste batteries in proportion to what they sell on the UK market.
A large producer will be someone who sells more than 1 tonne of batteries each year. They will be required by law to join the Battery Compliance Scheme and also register with the correct environment agency. The Scheme will arrange for the collection, treatment and recycling of batteries on their behalf.
A smaller producer who sells less than 1 tonne of batteries within the UK markets each year will be exempt from paying to join the scheme but will still have to register with the correct environment agency.
Producers will be expected to provide information on the amount and weight of batteries that they sell from 5th May 2009.
