How to install a 4th generation ipod battery (4G):

). Make sure your iPod is OFF! Insert the large opening tool into the side of the iPod’s back shell. Open a gap between the front face and the back shell. The easiest way to do this is to squeeze the iPod a bit, while pressing towards the side of the iPod. It will take a few tries. You may have to hold the iPod in your hand to insert the tool - please be very careful not to slip or drop the iPod.

). Gently work the tool from the top edge to the bottom edge and then around the ipod, releasing all of the clips. Use extreme caution while sliding the tool across the dock connector as this is delicate. Once the back shell is released, GENTLY tip it towards the top. Be exceedingly careful of the ribbon connector that goes to the audio jack.

DO NOT remove the connector - it is not necessary to replace battery.

). Lift up the hard drive from the dock connector side about 1”. Grip the connector cable between you fingers with the hard drive in your other hand.

). Gently remove the connecting cable from the hard drive by pulling straight on the connector. Do not bend any pins on the hard drive, use extreme caution. Once removed, place the hard drive aside.

). The battery is glued into the housing of the iPod. Place the thin tool that came with the battery in between the groove shown, and gently, but firmly, pry upward on the battery. If you’re lucky, the battery will come loose with a “snap”. If you’re not lucky, you may need to use a hair dryer to heat the battery and loosen the glue beneath. Good luck!

). Take a pair of cutting pliers or scissors and cut the red, white and black battery wires. Unplug the white battery connector from the logic board connector, the logic board is fragile so be careful.

). Hold the iPod firmly and pull the battery away from the battery connector so that the wires slide out from under the logic board. Be firm but careful. Firmly press the new battery into the opening but try to do this without flexing the logic board.

). Insert the plug and route the wires as shown, over the circuit board. Place the hard drive back on the iPod, and line the connectors up. Place the back of the iPod back onto the front. Work from one side to the other, pressing the face onto the back using equal pressure. Make sure that the static shield is fully tucked in and the dock connector is not blocked. Your iPod is ready to go back into service. Be sure to charge the iPod overnight.
